I feel a connection to Julian Bond and his legacy at making this country and particularly my community better for people of all kinds, especially people like myself. On the other hand, I’m extremely disappointed and feel saddened that Clarence Thomas, who has such a story to tell and has the ability to do so much for equality and justice, that he won’t do so for people like myself. He won’t apply stand on principle for equal justice among gay and lesbian Americans. So, that connection is lost.

Let’s spot Clarence Thomas this at the outset: He is not obligated to justify to anyone, and certainly not to white people, why he is Not That Black Man – or, as he puts it “in his own words” in this strained video portrait, “the wrong kind of black man” to be allowed to attain power.
This matters here because Created Equal is a monologue and an apologia for the Supreme Court justice’s controversial career, yet also firmly centered on his black life. So the documentary raises the question of how a poor black boy from the Sea Islands in Georgia ends up a political and legal conservative, but then leaves it laying on the table, unanswered in a cloud of Thomas’ grouchy diffidence and reticence.
This is the sort of film made for block-bookings of MAGA church youth groups – Thomas’ wife Ginni floats in and out to drop evangelical code words about the angels and demons warring over his fate. It doesn’t say much about his judicial or political philosophy beyond brief and opaque gestures at “originalism” and “natural law” and a clip of Gary Cooper in The Fountainhead. Thomas starts to articulate a thesis of libertarianism, rather than liberalism, being the appropriate intellectual home of black men scarred by racism, but doesn’t really finish the thought; he speaks of a road-to-Damascus moment and concluding that certain principles are worth dying for, but the movie never lays out with much clarity what those are. Perhaps it’s assumed the audience will view Thomas as a virtuous warrior for God and country and Trumpish stuff, but he also comes off as a friendless misfit and kind of a hotep, the Uncle Ruckus of the Supreme Court.
Thomas has never faced the threat of death for his beliefs, but of course he thinks he has, and Created Equal wades deeply into his martyrdom (and the sufferings of poor Ginni! ) at the hands of foolish Anita Hill, wicked Ted Kennedy and idiotic Joe Biden – thirty years later, he’s still clearly not over it and wants the viewers (those MAGA kids for whom this is all new information) to be likewise aggrieved. Thomas’ retelling of his origin story does hold some interest, decorated here by gorgeous landscape shots and archival imagery heavy on the Spanish moss, soundtracked by Johnny Mercer. From the free and joyous rural poverty of tiny Pin Point to corrupt urban squalor in Savannah, young Clarence is saved when taken in by his strict, illiterate yet morally faultless grandfather – an upbringing that sounds grim and traumatic, but laid out here as a precursor to the justice’s admirable stoicism and steely determination. The school of hard knocks tees up his isolation and insensitivity in adulthood; Thomas enters Catholic seminary, quits in the wake of shocking racism, is then kicked out by his grandfather, and looks back on all of this as necessarily formative. He goes through a bitter Black Power phase in college up north, then recoils and literally falls to his knees in repentance. Then he goes through Yale Law bearing what he perceives as the burden of discrimination (he can’t get a good job because he’s black), and onward and upward on what empirically is a meteoric career trajectory but to him is a trail of tears. One wants to reach through the screen at the end of this narcissistic exercise, grasp his shoulders and give him a good shake: “Get a grip, man. You’re Clarence Thomas. ”

Although Clarence Thomas remains a controversial figure, loved by some, reviled by others, few know much more than a few headlines and the recollections of his contentious confirmation battle with Anita Hill. With unprecedented access, the producers interviewed Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Virginia, for over 30 hours of interview time, over many months. Justice Thomas tells his entire life’s story, looking directly at the camera, speaking frankly to the audience. After a brief introduction, the documentary proceeds chronologically, combining Justice Thomas’ first person account with a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience.
In 1948, Clarence Thomas was born into dire poverty in Pin Point, Georgia, a Gullah- speaking peninsula in the segregated South. His father abandoned the family when Clarence was two years old. His mother, unable to care for two boys, brought Clarence and his brother, Myers, to live with her father and his wife. Thomas’ grandfather, Myers Anderson, whose schooling ended at the third grade, delivered coal and heating oil in Savannah. He gave the boys tough love and training in hard work. He sent them to a segregated Catholic school where the Irish nuns taught them self-discipline and a love of learning. From there, Thomas entered the seminary, training to be a priest.
As the times changed, Thomas began to rebel against the values of his grandfather. Angered by his fellow seminarians’ racist comments following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and disillusioned by the Catholic Church’s general failure to support the civil rights movement, Thomas left the seminary. His grandfather felt Thomas had betrayed him by questioning his values and kicked Thomas out of his house. In 1968, Thomas enrolled as a scholarship student at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. While there, he helped found the Black Student Union and supported the burgeoning Black Power Movement.
Then, Thomas’s views began to change, as he saw it, back to his grandfather’s values. He judged the efforts of the left and liberals to help his people to be demeaning failures. To him, affirmative action seemed condescending and ineffective, sending African-American students to schools where they were not prepared to succeed. He watched the busing crisis in Boston tear the city apart. To Thomas, it made no sense. Why, he asked, pluck poor black kids out of their own bad schools only to bus them to another part of town to sit with poor white students in their bad schools?
At Yale Law School, he felt stigmatized by affirmative action, treated as if he were there only because of his race, minimizing his previous achievements. After graduating in 1974, he worked for then State Attorney General John Danforth in Missouri, eventually working in the Reagan administration, first running the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Education and then the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 1990, he became a judge on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. His confirmation hearings would test his character and principles in the crucible of national controversy. Like the Bork hearings in 1987, the Democrats went after Thomas’ record and his jurisprudence, especially natural law theory, but also attacked his character. When that failed, and he was on the verge of being confirmed, a former employee, Anita Hill, came forth to accuse him of sexual harassment. The next few days of televised hearings riveted the nation. Finally, defending himself against relentless attacks by the Democratic Senators on the committee, Thomas accused them of running “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas. ” After wall-to-wall television coverage, according to the national polls, the American people believed Thomas by more than a 2-1 margin. Yet, Thomas was confirmed by the closest margin in history, 52-48.
In his 27 years on the court, Thomas’s jurisprudence has often been controversial—from his brand of originalism to his decisions on affirmative action and other hot button topics. Critical journalists often point out that he rarely speaks in oral argument.
The public remains curious about Clarence Thomas—both about his personal history and his judicial opinions. His 2007 memoir, My Grandfather’s Son, was number one on The New York Times’ bestseller list.
In addition to the two-hour feature length documentary film, a companion website providing more details and curriculum materials will be created and available. The website will draw on the over thirty hours of interviews of both Justice Thomas and his wife, most of which did not appear in the film.

Beneath Us is Max Pachman’s feature directorial debut, and is produced by Luis Guerrero and Chris Lemos, with Jay Hernandez and William Knochel serving as executive producers. [3] It features English and Spanish dialogue. [1] Guerrero said the film was in the works since 2011. [4] In 2017, it was reported that Premiere Entertainment Group had picked up worldwide rights to the film. [5]

The swallows, martins and saw-wings, or Hirundinidae, are a family of passerine birds found around the world on all continents, including occasionally in Antarctica. Highly adapted to aerial feeding, they have a distinctive appearance. The term Swallow is used colloquially in Europe as a synonym for the barn swallow. There are around 90 species of Hirundinidae, [1] divided into 19 genera, with the greatest diversity found in Africa, which is also thought to be where they evolved as hole-nesters. [2] They also occur on a number of oceanic islands. A number of European and North American species are long-distance migrants; by contrast, the West and South African swallows are non-migratory.
This family comprises two subfamilies: Pseudochelidoninae (the river martins of the genus Pseudochelidon) and Hirundininae (all other swallows, martins and saw-wings). Within the Old World, the name martin tends to be used for the squarer-tailed species, and the name swallow for the more fork-tailed species; however, there is no scientific distinction between these two groups. [3] Within the New World, “martin” is reserved for members of the genus Progne. (These two systems are responsible for the sand martin being called ” bank swallow ” in the New World. )
Taxonomy and systematics [ edit]
The family Hirundinidae was introduced (as Hirundia) by the French polymath Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1815. [4] [5] The Hirundinidae are morphologically unique within the passerines, with molecular evidence placing them as a distinctive lineage within the Sylvioidea ( Old World warblers and relatives). [6] They have also been linked to the white-eyes and the tits. Under the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy they have been placed in the infraorder Passerida.
Within the family there is a clear division between the two subfamilies, the Pseudochelidoninae which is composed of the two species of river martins, [7] [8] and the Hirundininae, into which the remaining species are placed. The division of the Hirundininae has been the source of much discussion, with various taxonomists variously splitting them into as many as 24 genera and lumping them into just 12. There is some agreement that there are three core groups within the Hirundininae, the saw-wings of the genus Psalidoprocne, the core martins, and the swallows of the genus Hirundo and their allies. [9] The saw-wings are the most basal of the three, with the other two clades being sister to each other. The phylogeny of the swallows is closely related to evolution of nest construction; the more basal saw-wings use burrows as nest, the core martins have both burrowing (in the Old World members) and cavity adoption (in New World members) as strategies, and the genus Hirundo and its allies use mud nests. [10]
Description [ edit]
The Hirundinidae have an evolutionarily conservative body shape which is similar across the clade but is unlike that of other passerines. [9] Swallows have adapted to hunting insects on the wing by developing a slender, streamlined body and long pointed wings, which allow great maneuverability and endurance, as well as frequent periods of gliding. Their body shape allows for very efficient flight; the metabolic rate of swallows in flight is 49–72% lower than equivalent passerines of the same size. [11]
The bill of the sand martin is typical for the family, being short and wide.
Swallows have two foveae in each eye, giving them sharp lateral and frontal vision to help track prey. They also have relatively long eyes, with their length almost equaling their width. The long eyes allow for an increase in visual acuity without competing with the brain for space inside of the head. The morphology of the eye in swallows is similar to that of a raptor. [12]
Like the unrelated swifts and nightjars, which hunt in a similar way, they have short bills, but strong jaws and a wide gape. Their body length ranges from about 10–24 cm (3. 9–9. 4 in) and their weight from about 10–60 g (0. 35–2. 12 oz). The wings are long, pointed, and have nine primary feathers. The tail has 12 feathers and may be deeply forked, somewhat indented, or square-ended. [9] A long tail increases maneuverability, [13] [14] and may also function as a sexual adornment, since the tail is frequently longer in males. [14] In barn swallows the tail of the male is 18% longer than those of the female, and females will select mates on the basis of tail length. [15]
The legs are short, and their feet are adapted for perching rather than walking, as the front toes are partially joined at the base. Swallows are capable of walking and even running, but they do so with a shuffling, waddling gait. [16] The leg muscles of the river martins ( Pseudochelidon) are stronger and more robust than those of other swallows. [9] [16] The river martins have other characteristics that separate them from the other swallows. The structure of the syrinx is substantially different between the two subfamilies; [7] and in most swallows the bill, legs and feet are dark brown or black, but in the river martins the bill is orange-red and the legs and feet are pink. [9]
The most common hirundine plumage is glossy dark blue or green above and plain or streaked underparts, often white or rufous. Species which burrow or live in dry or mountainous areas are often matte brown above (e. g. sand martin and crag martin). The sexes show limited or no sexual dimorphism, with longer outer tail feathers in the adult male probably being the most common distinction. [17]
The chicks hatch naked and with closed eyes. [18] Fledged juveniles usually appear as duller versions of the adult. [3]
Distribution and habitat [ edit]
The family has a worldwide cosmopolitan distribution, breeding on every continent except Antarctica. One species, the Pacific swallow, occurs as a breeding bird on a number of oceanic islands in the Pacific Ocean, [19] the Mascarene martin breeds on Reunion and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, [20] and a number of migratory species are common vagrants to other isolated islands and even to some sub-Antarctic islands and Antarctica. [21] Many species have enormous worldwide ranges, particularly the barn swallow, which breeds over most of the Northern Hemisphere and winters over most of the Southern Hemisphere.
The family uses a wide range of habitats. They are dependent on flying insects and as these are common over waterways and lakes they will frequently feed over these, but they can be found in any open habitat including grasslands, open woodland, savanna, marshes, mangroves and scrubland, from sea level to high alpine areas. [9] Many species inhabit human-altered landscapes including agricultural land and even urban areas. Land use changes have also caused some species to expand their range, most impressively the welcome swallow which began to colonise New Zealand in the 1920s, started breeding in the 1950s and is now a common landbird there. [22]
Species breeding in temperate regions migrate during the winter when their insect prey populations collapse. Species breeding in more tropical areas are often more sedentary, although several tropical species are partial migrants or make shorter migrations. In antiquity it was thought that swallows hibernated in a state of torpor, even that they withdrew for the winter under water. Aristotle ascribed hibernation not only to swallows, but also to storks and kites. Hibernation of swallows was considered a possibility even by as acute an observer as Rev. Gilbert White, in his The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (1789, based on decades of observations). [23] This idea may have been supported by the habit of some species to roost in some numbers in dovecotes, nests and other forms of shelter during harsh weather, and some species even entering torpor. [9] There were several reports of suspected torpor in swallows from 1947, [24] such as a 1970 report that white-backed swallows in Australia may conserve energy this way, [25] but the first confirmed study that they or any passerine entered torpor was a 1988 study on house martins. [26]
Behaviour and ecology [ edit]
Swallows are excellent flyers, and use these skills to feed and attract a mate. Some species, like the mangrove swallow, are territorial, whereas others are not and simply defend their nesting site. In general, the males select a nest site, and then attract a female using song and flight, and (dependent on the species) guard their territory. The size of the territory varies depending on the species of swallow; in colonial-nesting species it tends to be small, but it may be much larger for solitary nesters. Outside the breeding season, some species may form large flocks, and species may also roost communally. This is thought to provide protection from predators such as sparrowhawks and hobbies. [9] These roosts can be enormous; one winter roosting site of barn swallows in Nigeria attracted 1. 5 million individuals. [27] Non-social species do not form flocks, but recently fledged chicks may remain with their parents for a while after the breeding season. If a human being gets too close to their territory, swallows will attack them within the perimeter of the nest. Colonial species may mob predators and humans that are too close to the colony. [28]
Diet and feeding [ edit]
For the most part swallows are insectivorous, taking flying insects on the wing. [9] Across the whole family a wide range of insects are taken from most insect groups, but the composition of any one prey type in the diet varies by species and with the time of year. Individual species may be selective; they do not scoop up every insect around them, but instead select larger prey items than would be expected by random sampling. [29] In addition the ease of capture of different insect types affects their rate of predation by swallows. [30] They also avoid certain prey types; in particular stinging insects such as bees and wasps are generally avoided. In addition to insect prey a number of species will occasionally consume fruits and other plant matter. Species in Africa have been recorded eating the seeds of Acacia trees, and these are even fed to the young of the greater striped swallow. [9] [31]
The swallows generally forage for prey that is on the wing, but they will on occasion snap prey off branches or on the ground. The flight may be fast and involve a rapid succession of turns and banks when actively chasing fast moving prey; less agile prey may be caught with a slower more leisurely flight that includes flying in circles and bursts of flapping mixed with gliding. Where several species of swallow feed together they will be separated into different niches based on height off the ground, some species feeding closer to the ground and others feeding at higher levels. [32] Similar separation occurs where feeding overlaps with swifts. Niche separation may also occur with the size of prey chosen. [32]
Breeding [ edit]
The more primitive species nest in existing cavities, for example in an old woodpecker nest, while other species excavate burrows in soft substrate such as sand banks. [9] Swallows in the genera Hirundo, Ptyonoproggne, Cecropis, Petrochelidon and Delichon build mud nests close to overhead shelter in locations that are protected from both the weather and predators. The mud-nesters are most common in the Old World, particularly Africa, whereas cavity-nesters are the rule in the New World. Mud nesting species in particular are limited in areas of high humidity, which causes the mud nests to crumble. Many cave, bank and cliff dwelling species of swallow nest in large colonies. Mud nests are constructed by both males and females, and amongst the tunnel diggers the excavation duties are shared as well. In historical times, the introduction of man-made stone structures such as barns and bridges, together with forest clearance, has led to an abundance of colony sites around the globe, significantly increasing the breeding ranges of some species. Birds living in large colonies typically have to contend with both ectoparasites and conspecific nest parasitism. [33] [34] In barn swallows, old mated males and young unmated males benefit from colonial behaviour, whereas it is likely that females and mated young males benefit more from nesting by themselves. [35]
Pairs of mated swallows are monogamous, [36] and pairs of non-migratory species often stay near their breeding area all year, though the nest site is defended most vigorously during the breeding season. Migratory species often return to the same breeding area each year, and may select the same nest site if they were previously successful in that location. First-year breeders generally select a nesting site close to where they were born and raised. [37] The breeding of temperate species is seasonal, whereas that of subtropical or tropical species can either be continuous throughout the year or seasonal. Seasonal species in the subtropics or tropics are usually timed to coincide with the peaks in insect activity, which is usually the wet season, but some species like the white-bibbed swallow nest in the dry season to avoid flooding in their riverbank nesting habitat. [9] All swallows will defend their nests from egg predators, although solitary species are more aggressive towards predators than colonial species. [38] Overall the contribution of male swallows towards parental care is the highest of any passerine bird. [9]
The eggs of swallows tend to be white, although those of some mud-nesters are speckled. The average clutch size is around four to five eggs in temperate areas and two to three eggs in the tropics. The incubation duties are shared in some species, in others the eggs are incubated solely by the females. Amongst the species where the male helps with incubation the contribution varies amongst species, with some species like the cliff swallow sharing the duties equally and the female doing most of the work in others. Amongst the barn swallows the male of the American subspecies helps (to a small extent) whereas the European subspecies does not. Even in species where the male does not incubate the eggs the male may sit on them when the female is away to reduce heat loss (this is different from incubation as that involves warming the eggs, not just stopping heat loss). Incubation stints last for 5–15 minutes and are followed by bursts of feeding activity. From laying, swallow eggs take between 10–21 days to hatch, with 14–18 days being more typical. [9]
The chicks of swallows hatch naked, generally with only a few tufts of down. The eyes are closed and do not fully open for up to 10 days. The feathers take a few days to begin to sprout, and the chicks are brooded by the parents until they are able to thermoregulate. On the whole they develop slowly compared to other passerine birds. The parents do not usually feed the chicks individual insects but instead a bolus of food comprising ten to a hundred insects. Regardless of whether the species has males that incubate or brood the chicks, the males of all hirundines will help feed the chicks. It is difficult to judge when the young fledge, as they will be enticed out of the nest after three weeks by parents but frequently return to the nest afterwards in order to roost. [9]
Calls [ edit]
Swallows are able to produce many different calls or songs, which are used to express excitement, to communicate with others of the same species, during courtship, or as an alarm when a predator is in the area. The songs of males are related to the body condition of the bird and are presumably used by females to judge the physical condition and suitability for mating of males. [39] Begging calls are used by the young when soliciting food from their parents. The typical song of swallows is a simple, sometimes musical twittering.
Status and conservation [ edit]
Species of hirundine that are threatened with extinction are generally endangered due to habitat loss. This is presumed to be the reason behind the decline of the critically endangered white-eyed river martin, a species that is only known from a few specimens collected in Thailand. The species presumably breeds in riverbanks, a much diminished habitat in SE Asia. As the species hasn’t been reliably seen since 1980 it may already be extinct. [40] Two insular species, the Bahama swallow and golden swallow, have declined due to forest loss and also competition with introduced species such as starlings and sparrows, which compete with these swallows for nesting sites. The golden swallow formerly bred on the island of Jamaica, but was last seen there in 1989 and is now restricted to the island of Hispaniola. [41]
Relationship with humans [ edit]
Swallows are tolerated by humans because of their beneficial role as insect-eaters, and some species have readily adapted to nesting in and around human habitation. The barn swallow and house martin now rarely use natural sites. The purple martin is also actively encouraged by people to nest around humans and elaborate nest boxes are erected. Enough artificial nesting sites have been created that the purple martin now seldom nests in natural cavities in the eastern part of its range. [42]
Because of the long human experience with these conspicuous species, many myths and legends have arisen as a consequence, particularly relating to the barn swallow. [9] The Roman historian Pliny the Elder described a use of painted swallows to deliver a report of the winning horses at a race. [43] During the nineteenth century, Jean Desbouvrie attempted to tame swallows and train them for use as messenger birds, as an alternative to war pigeons. He succeeded in curbing the migratory instinct in young birds and persuaded the government of France to conduct initial testing, but further experimentation stalled. [43] [44] Subsequent attempts to train homing behaviour into swallows and other passerines had difficulty establishing a statistically significant success rate, although the birds have been known to trap themselves repeatedly in order to obtain bait from traps. [43]
According to a sailing superstition, swallows are a good omen to those at sea. This probably arose from the fact that swallows are land-based birds, so their appearance informs a sailor that he is close to shore. [45]
An old term of venery for swallows is a “flight” or “sweep”. [46]

Writer and director Carlo Mirabella-Davis delivers her feature debut “Swallow” a character study, a film built on psychology of abuse, isolation, alienation, depression and obsession. In its center, Haley Bennett puts on a great performance as a newly-wed, newly pregnant housewife who’s psyche is slowly crumbling and who can’t find any stable ground or control over her life. “Swallow” is a rarely rich movie, but not with plot, characters or action.
“Swallow” is a carefully and patiently composed psychological study, clothed up in pastel-like colors and sure-handed, competent and clean-feeling cinematography. The viewer follows Hunter (Haley Bennett) as she struggles to find an emotional ground in her new life in which she has rushed in unprepared. Even though Hunter has it all – wealth, money, free time. Swallow” makes a good point in saying that materialistic means do not guarantee happiness. Hunter’s husband and his family are a controlling, untrustworthy and egoistical bunch, making her suffer even more. Trying to escape the painful routine, Hunter develop a compulsive, obsessive habit to swallow various small things, rocks, needles, marbles, even batteries. On the journey we also learn about the weight of past traumas on her shoulders – on the journey to the eventual resurrection of the mind and free will. Haley Bennett shines all throughout this journey, in a brave and intimate portrayal of a troubled woman. “Swallow” isn’t a plot-based movie, but that should already be apparent. It also doesn’t exactly fit in the horror genre & long story short, the way its marketed could be misleading to a lot of people who’ll like it less for those reasons. There’s a level of absurdity and surrealism, but well self-acknowledged and tailored together truly tightly, making “Swallow” feel like a borderless yet solidified piece of mood and contemplation cinema. An art-house with such a psychological weight that it makes up in substance where plot and some other usual, conventional elements do not.
Despite “Swallow” being a successful and impressive oddball future cult drama presenting (always) relevant issues in women and, truthfully, the entire society, it also has flaws, like a pacing that is consistent to a fault (never really picks up) lack of story and the fact that it won’t satisfy the more mainstream audiences. Not that I care much, I recommend this to those who get intrigued by what can be described as “odd” or “weird” as much as myself. My rating: 7/10.

In a time when we’re forced to experience new movies from the questionable comforts of our homes, Haley Bennett’s role as a woman undone hits hard.

As the spread of coronavirus continues to halt the release of new movies in theaters, Vulture’s film critics will be sporadically reconsidering the movies available to stream from home instead.
The first time Hunter (Haley Bennett) swallows something she shouldn’t, it’s framed like an act of communion. Or as though she’s been briefly touched by the divine, the silence of the empty house around her replaced by distant sounds of a seaside where a child is at play. The object of her fixation is a marble that she picks out from a display case as though called to it and that she holds up to the light before contemplatively putting it in her mouth and then, finally, gulping it down. Afterward, she has the quiet glow of someone who’s accomplished something — which, in a warped way, she has. She’s disrupted the placid surface of her existence, which otherwise involves days spent in picturesque solitude while her husband, Richie (Austin Stowell), is at work. Their Hudson River Valley home enfolds her like protective casing while she gestates what he and his family clearly think of as his, not their, child.
But she’s only striving to keep up that appearance of mint condition. Swallow, the impressive first scripted feature from Carlo Mirabella-Davis, is about a case of pica, a psychological disorder that involves urges to eat nonfood items and that can be triggered by pregnancy as well as by stress. In that sense, it’s a horror film, because the things that Hunter feels compelled to consume in secret are increasingly disturbing. There is, for instance, a thumbtack, which doesn’t go down easily and which, we’re reminded by a later glimpse of blood in the bathroom, has likely done damage all the way through her digestive system before making a wince-worthy exit. Swallow isn’t body horror in the Cronenberg sense, but it is about the horrors a body can prove capable of, especially for someone trying to maintain an image of unruffled perfection that leads her to donning gloves to remove the evidence of her illicit habit from the toilet bowl.
It’s the setup for a portrait of a breakdown, for an installment of that venerable, sadism-inflected mini-genre that is the portrait of a woman coming undone, often in isolation. And Hunter is, frequently, alone in that tasteful mid-century-modern house — until a nurse (Laith Nakli) is hired to guard her, or at least guard the fetus she’s carrying, from her own compulsions. In her vintage-esque outfits, Hunter feels unstuck in time, like a representative of any number of women across decades who’ve been deemed unworthy caretakers of their own bodies. She slowly splinters under a bombardment of casual slights from her husband and his family.
But the quiet astonishment of Swallow comes from the fact that it actually turns out not to be about a breakdown but a breakthrough. It’d be wrong to say that Hunter’s pica saves her, but it does force her to awaken from the numb passivity with which she’s been drifting through life, grounding her more and more in her own fallible, fecund flesh. Swallow begins dreamlike, with its main character moving behind the giant windows of the house like she’s been sealed up inside a terrarium. But realism creeps in as it goes along, as Hunter’s secret comes out, as she shifts from being a kind of archetype of a suppressed spouse and becomes a fully fledged character with a background that offers some understanding of how she ended up where she is. Her habit of introducing foreign things into her body parallels her slowly dawning realization that there’s something already inside her that she doesn’t want there.
There’s this conversation that flares up every few months online about the term “elevated horror, ” which has been understandably criticized for implying that there’s such a thing as “regular horror” that’s lesser than and not worth taking seriously. But a film like Swallow makes a case for the need for some sort of label, maybe a less loaded alternative, to signal that something’s scares aren’t of the traditional sort. There’s a type of devoted fan who wouldn’t consider Swallow horror at all, though that’s what it is, at heart. It’s about a woman sleepwalking toward doom, even if that doom doesn’t involve the supernatural or a knife-wielding slasher. Swallow shares commonalities with The Invisible Man, another recent movie about a woman in a controlling marriage that offers a more standard type of thrill — both films are suddenly available to watch in our homes, with some help from the coronavirus. But while The Invisible Man was built around its clever set pieces rather than its characters, Swallow is led by its protagonist’s mental and emotional state. It takes place in a landscape that’s largely internal — but that’s territory that can be just as filled with darkness and dread as a forbidding mansion.
Swallow hit theaters on March 6 but is available to rent on iTunes and Prime.

This year in film starts with a tricky prospect—a brutal arthouse director handling a studio project (good) that’s also the second American remake of a half-scary 2002 Japanese movie (not promising). Can you recommend a horror movie based on its impressive meanness? Meet Nicolas Pesce ’s new and improved take on “ The Grudge, ” which is often as nasty as you want it to be, its cheesy jump-scares and generic packaging be damned. Based on the original script by Takashi Shimizu (who did the 2004 American remake of his film “Ju-on”), Pesce’s script is still about a Japanese home that is cursed by a murder that happened in extreme rage, and the supernatural entity that travels with anyone who has been in the home (in this version, an American woman brings it stateside before the opening credits). More than worrying about who’s-who in a new saga of cursed people, Pesce orchestrates a dense, foreboding atmosphere, where unlucky souls have to manage their own oppressive sadness, along with the shadowy, space-invading entities that pop up in the dark.

One of the first things you notice about this movie is how bleak it is—characters are introduced with the brutal cards life has dealt them, the kind no one wants to receive. Take Andrea Riseborough ’s Detective Muldoon, who has recently moved to the new town of Cross River because her husband has just died of cancer. She learns about a house on 44 Reyburn Drive which has connections to other since-buried murder cases in town, like one from 2005 involving a real estate agent named Peter ( John Cho) and his wife Nina ( Betty Gilpin)—we meet them as they get life-shattering news about the baby she’s carrying, and they spend the duration of the movie with it lingering between their silences. The gut-punch of their arc then doesn’t come from supernatural shenanigans that follow Peter, so much as what happens one night when he leaves the Reyburn home. For good measure, the film also features a plot-line about a Reyburn resident ( Frankie Faison) who wants to euthanize his loving wife of nearly 50 years (with the help of a “compassionate presence” played by Jacki Weaver) because of her deteriorating mental state. And he wants to do so in the Reyburn home because of his pitiful desperation to harness the property’s tenuous boundaries with life and death. Faison bottles up a lot of pain in a brief monologue, and it’s one of many moments in which “The Grudge” labors on storytelling parts that are often thankless in less inspired horror fare. Pesce’s “The Grudge” gets a lot of mileage out of the unsettling spectacle of suffering, perhaps best encapsulated by a scene that introduces horror legend Lin Shaye. She’s initially only heard as the wailing voice of a woman inside the shadowy Reyburn house, as someone steps inside wanting to see what the fuss is about. Shaye’s back is turned but her cries are palpable and nightmarish, and that’s before she steps forward and into the light, and we get to see her hands. In this well-calibrated scene, Pesce then leads us to another one of his signature freaky images of life’s abandonment—a meticulously gnarly corpse, illuminated by the sudden fuzz of a TV screen.
Just as Shimizu’s original movie told itself in character-based chapters, Pesce’s story (story credit shared with Jeff Buhler) is like an ensemble movie where familiar faces provide emotional fortification for lean character detail. All of Pesce’s supporting actors (including Demian Bechir, who looks ready to lead a season of “True Detective”) make clear how vulnerable and helpless these people are, and in turn highlight how cruel it would be for a horrible force to make them suffer even more. It’s Riseborough’s show in the end, as she investigates the house’s full history, but everyone gets their own harrowing sequence, and there’s a gratifying genre thrill in seeing an actor like William Sadler (playing a detective who cursed himself by investigating a murder years ago) tear through a flashback that shows how he was driven mad, which includes some great body horror. The same goes for Jacki Weaver, who is more compelling in a scene of being terrorized at a grocery store than the freaky stuff happening around her. While juggling these different lives in different timelines, Pesce achieves a seamlessness that creates a backstory more about the entity’s kill count than it does individual characters. But he gets a strong pacing, all while telling the same downhill trajectory of how these people unwittingly cursed themselves, and became prey to a force that has little logic other than to appear in the shadows, be angry, and be consistent. In Pesce’s hands, the supernatural force that attacks these characters isn’t like the bad-luck ghost from Shimizu’s version, but feels as ever-present and ruthless as grief itself. Pesce’s “The Grudge” often leads his uniformly strong cast to a jump-scare, and those jolts prove to be its least exciting attribute. Not just because of their generic construction (though Pesce can wind them up like a pro), but the pay-off, of seeing shadowy, wet figures scream with their eyes blacked out, sometimes introduced by the goofy slow croaking sound that “The Grudge” has made canon. Yes, there’s ghoulish stuff involving tubs and showers, but they play more like “Grudge” visual cues than standalone anxious sequences. There’s a lot of peekaboos in “The Grudge, ” too many for what makes the movie good, and by the third act they feel like an awkward part of the transaction in watching a horror film made by a studio that needs a good trailer.
Yet while it’s not very good at being scary, “The Grudge” excels at being unsettling. It proves to be a worthwhile fit for Pesce, whose relentless directorial debut “ The Eyes of My Mother ” is an automatic dare for any horror fan who hasn’t seen it; an act of emotional terrorism on its audience as much as its characters. That vision shines through in “The Grudge” more often than not, even if there are moments that are like watching an artisanal chef make cereal. In making a top contender for the feel-bad movie of 2020, Pesce is clearly leading with heart, and an impressive lack of it.

This looks surprisingly GOOD.
The Grudge is a very flawed horror movie whose good charactetics are offset by the negative. For instance features brilliant performances by Andrea Risenborough, and Lin Shaye but that is not enough to make the story good. While Risenborough is the protagonist, her character has no arc. She is still the same detective from start to finish. We do feel for her, but her character could have been better utilized. As for Lin Shaye, there should have been more of her scenes, because she came off as both creepy and tragic. Second, there are some shocking death scenes, and effective scares. But they are too few to make the movie a proper scary movie. Having seen other Sam Raimi-produced movies, I was hoping for a lot of bloodshed and gore but that did not happen. In short, The Grudge is one of the lower tier horror movies to spend on an extremely boring day. I believe giving it an F score is unfair, but this is definitely sub par.

I went into this movie with pretty low expectations, coming off of seeing the awful Black Christmas remake. The perks, good acting, good atmosphere., good gore. The negatives, everything else.
The Grudge 2020 felt like someone pressed fast forward through the script. Present time, past, rinse and repeat. Not much substance to really have you invested in any of the characters or plot. None of the characters had enough screen time or development to really have you care all that much.
Decent night at the movies for what is a flick I won’t be watching again. A generous 6/10 because I liked the cast.
